A truck driver is lucky to be alive after a frightening highway rollover crash in northern NSW.
Traffic chaos has ensued after the heavy vehicle overturned and blocked several lanes on the Pacific Motorway (M1) at Pimlico, just near the Ballina exit.
The crash happened shortly before 2pm on Friday and emergency services have been working at the site after the truck crossed two lanes and smashed through a barrier, according to NSW Police.
The driver, the only person in the truck, was trapped in his cab after the rollover, but has been freed by Fire and Rescue NSW.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said the driver was not injured, but was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Police warned after the crash motorists could expect lengthy delays as work continued to clear southbound lanes and one northbound lane.
Southbound lanes of the highway were still affected about 4pm and motorists were being re-directed to the Bruxner Highway, as well as other roads to return to the motorway at Coolgardie.
A police pokesman said the truck driver appeared “lucky” to have escaped the crash uninjured and emergency services faced “a huge clean-up job”.
The truck was due to be towed from the site on Friday afternoon.
