FAIRHOLME College blitzed this year's NAPLAN test across all year levels, taking the crown of the smartest school in Toowoomba.
A News Corp analysis revealed the school was the 27th smartest secondary school in the state and the top in Toowoomba. Its Year 7 and Year 9 students received an average NAPLAN score of 5921.
The second best performing high school was The Glennie School where the average score was 5859, while the third best performing school was Concordia Lutheran College where the average score was 5836.
Students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 took part in the controversial nationwide standardised test in May.
The test is designed to measure students in literacy and numeracy and track progress.
Fairholme was also the 44th top primary school in the state, and the top in Toowoomba. Year 3 and Year 5 students at Fairholme College got an average NAPLAN score of 5022.
The second best performing primary schools was a tie between The Glennie School and Toowoomba Anglican School where the average result was 4954 for Year 3 and Year 5 students.
Rockville State School was the top state primary school in Toowoomba, and the 1081st primary school in the state.
Harristown State High School was the top state high school in Toowoomba, and the 346th in the state.
Fairholme College head of middle school Jaye Ross said the school did not do much specific preparation for the test, which examines students ability across five subject areas - reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.
"We rely on good teaching, hard-working students, students giving their best all year round and working hard throughout the year and building up those skills throughout the year.," Ms Ross said.
"That seems to pay off really well for us at NAPLAN.
"It's always pleasing to see students do well and that will always boost their confidence and feel pleased with their learning."
Ms Ross said NAPLAN was just one measure of a schools success and of a students success.
"There are lots of other things we value here at Fairholme that we're equally as proud of," she said.
"The things we value here is an enjoyment in learning, we like our students to feel challenged, but feel they're able able to meet that challenge and supported in that challenge. We feel that's important to us and then look at developing the whole student.
"Many of our girls are involved in extra curricular activities, like the arts and sports which we value very much here. Also pastoral care, making sure the girls feel confident, happy, and able to do their best and get on with their friends and teachers."
The NAPLAN test remains controversial with the Queensland Government calling for a national review into the test.
But advocates maintain the test is an important way to view student and school progress at one moment in time and schools use the results to improve teaching.
