A Warwick man sat on tenterhooks in the confines of a glass doc as the details of his prolonged violent offending were read out in court.

Keegan William Hooper has had no ordinary life, facing tragedy and misfortune from a young age which later led him down a path of drug abuse and violence, a court was told.

He pleaded guilty to multiple offences including serious assault of police causing bodily harm, obstructing police, contravening a domestic violence order and attempting to pervert justice in Warwick District Court on July 24.

The court was told the 42-year-old father and grandfather had a long history of assaulting and obstructing police and assaulting previous female partners.

During an arrest in May last year, the court was told Hooper was attempting to leave the back of the police vehicle when a struggle ensued with the officers.

In the midst of the struggle Hooper managed to grab an officer's radio and taser before he was then tasered by the second officer.

While on the ground he continued to resist police and kicked a female officer in the face.

In a victim impact statement, the female police officer detailed the profound effect Hooper’s offending has had, leaving her riddled with self-doubt and questioning her future in policing.

She was not present in court.

His barrister Jessica Goldie told the court Hooper had been engaging in a drug rehabilitation program while in custody and plans to reunite with family in Longreach upon his release.

Ms Goldie provided details of her client’s troubled childhood, having lost his father to alcoholism when he was just 10-years-old.

Judge Vicki Loury KC acknowledged Hooper’s history of violence towards police, describing his actions on the night he assaulted the female police officer as ‘appalling’.

“Police have an important role to perform in our community of protecting all of us from harm and they do not deserve to be treated the way you treated them on this night.” she said.

“No woman deserves to be kicked in the face, it’s appalling conduct.”

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment, with his 367 days in pre-sentence custody declared as time served and was released on parole.

Convictions were recorded.
