A Darling Downs teenager set foot in court for the first time after he drunkenly crashed his sister’s car while almost three times the legal limit.

The 15-year-old boy, who works two jobs, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol while unlicensed and obstructing police officers at the scene of the crash.

When he was sentenced before the Toowoomba Childrens Court on Friday, September 13, the court was told the teenager had never been before the courts.

The court was told about 1.20am on August 11, the drunk teenager crashed into a parked truck at Booval, Ipswich, lodging the small car inside the truck, and pushing it to collide with a car parked ahead.

When police arrived, the court was told the young man was throwing punches at witnesses.

After officers broke up the fight, he repeatedly disobeyed their instructions to sit and tried to re-engage in the physical conflict.

The court was told officers were forced to arrest the teen who had a BAC of 0.154.

All parties agreed a restorative justice order was an appropriate penalty for the first-time offender.

Acting magistrate Robert Turra said he rarely saw “good kids” like the teen come before the courts, noting how rare it was to see not one, but two supportive parents sitting in court.

He told the hard-working teen he clearly made a terrible decision however he never should have been behind the wheel of a car, regardless of his intoxication.

Given the “unusual” circumstances of the case, the teen was ordered to complete a restorative justice order and no convictions were recorded.
