If the Socceroos pull off a win against Argentina in the FIFA World Cup on Sunday morning it will go down down as one of the greatest moments in Australian sporting history.

As Phil Rothfield put it, think Australia II winning the America’s Cup victory in 1983 or Cathy Freeman’s sensational win at the Sydney Olympics.

Think Donald Bradman, Phar Lap or Ian Thorpe.

Even Australia making the final 16 after defeating Denmark 1-0 was a momental moment sending Aussies into screams of jubilation from Melbourne’s Federation Square and beyond.

When you think of the players in Argentina, said to be worth about $1.1 billion against the $58 million cost of our squad, a win on Sunday would send shockwaves across lovers of the round ball game.

This is a team, regardless of the outcome, is well worth celebrating for years to come.

Very few are giving them a chance of victory.

But they didn’t when they came up against Denmark.

What the Socceroos have shown is you can never write off the Australian spirit.

This is a team built on courage and hard work.

It is a team that believes in the impossible, led by a coach in Graham Arnold who only months ago was the subject of calls for his head.

Betting on the Socceroos was earlier at about $15 to win on Sunday with the TAB and that’s narrowed to $13 on Friday.

There was plenty of money put on the Aussies to win against Denmark with $7 odds.
