A DOG had to be rescued from a submerged mini-van after it ran into a small dam on a rural Southern Downs property.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said crews were called to the property near the end of Sugarloaf Rd and Nielsens Rd at Sugarloaf about 11am.

The occupants of an old-model Tarago people-mover, which had been towing a trailer, managed to escape the van which veered off the road and into the body of water.

However, firefighters had to rescue a dog which was trapped inside.

The Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics transported two people to Stanthorpe Hospital in stable conditions.

The dog was not injured.
