The development that could be replacing Eagers Holden on Newmarket Road

The new development that could be replacing Eagers Holden on Newmarket Rd has been revealed, but not all locals are pleased with the idea.

Holden closure: What happens now?

A suburban Holden dealership will be turned into a service station and retail hub.

But there has been some local opposition to the proposal just days after it was lodged.

The new development application for the site of Eagers Holden on Newmarket Rd in Windsor proposes to convert the dealership into a service station, fast food outlet and four retail showrooms.

The existing vehicle showroom and workshop would be demolished for redevelopment to occur.

The dealership is in a busy retail area, across the road from an Officeworks and a shopping centre.

The four retail showrooms would have a combined 1832 square metres of floor area and include 55 car parks.

But within days of the initial application being lodged two locals had lodged their concerns with council.

In one written objection, a resident said a petrol station at that site would significantly increase noise compared to the car dealership where most vehicles were parked.

The objection also stated the site was an existing hazard due to fuel contamination and believed that would be worse with a petrol station replacing it.

“Wilston and Windsor are historically known as wonderful leafy Brisbane City suburbs, with amazing services and lifestyle opportunities,” the submission said.

“We do not need the overpowering fumes from yet another fuel station in effectively our backyards.”

Another objection stated that the development would increase traffic and the risk of accidents.

“As a local resident I feel that the enormity and purpose of this type of development will be detrimental to the local community.

It is a quiet area and our streets are relatively unclogged, this development will change that.

“This is a central access area to the Downey Park sporting fields and bike track, families use the street and footpath to safely commute with their children to these areas.

“Making it a driveway with multiple entry and exit pints for a petrol station is going to put our children’s safety at risk.”
