Hundreds of new jobs, a revitalised Adelaide Street precinct and scenic river bikeways are at the forefront of Brisbane Metro’s new look, with Council revealing its vision today.

A new flythrough video offers River City residents a new look at Brisbane City Council’s heralded “turn up and go” bus system.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said part of the $1.2bn Metro development is a plan to shape Adelaide street into an iconic city boulevard, complete with widened footpaths, landscaping and new public infrastructure.

Mr Schrinner said Brisbane Metro buses would be funnelled under the street through a new 225m tunnel.

“Which removes public transport down below the street … which frees up room for people,” he said.

“The construction methodology to drill a … mine tunnel will reduce the impact on Adelaide Street” – minimising road closures and the impacts on bricks and mortar stores.

Council’s net Metro vision also reveals the overhaul of the Victoria Bridge – which will be closed to cars from Sunday – including viewing platforms, dedicated cycleway and expanded footpaths, which lead from the city to the Cultural Centre station.

Council expects the Metro project to surge ahead in 2021 and is expected to generate some 500 jobs this year alone.

“The highly-technical early works to guide the Adelaide Street tunnelling and construction activities at the depot facility at Rochedale will progress and really ramp up ahead of major construction getting underway later in the year,” Mr Schrinner said.

Council has also promised improved cycling and pedestrian connection from Victoria Bridge through South Bank and West End.

Federal Member for Brisbane Trevor Evans said the Federal Government was investing $300 million in the Brisbane Metro.

Adelaide Street investigation work in currently underway and excavation of the tunnel entrance near North Quay is expected to begin later this year.

“So much detailed investigation and planning work has to happen behind the scenes before we can break ground and start digging tunnels through the heart of the CBD,” Council Public and Active Transport Chair Ryan Murphy said.
