More than 200 young people have been arrested on hundreds of charges across Queensland in a new high-visibility police operation targeting youth crime.

Operation Victor Unison, set up on March 1, was rolled out in wake of a series of serious incidents involving juveniles, and has resulted in netting offenders on more than 1500 charges.

The extra police presence, sourced and funded by overtime shifts, has resulted in more than 750 arrests, 243 of which were juveniles on 617 charges.

It’s not clear how many of those juveniles had been remanded in custody or released on bail, but the majority were arrested on property crime offences.

Regional Acting Deputy Commissioner Mark Wheeler said police had conducted 1686 hotspot patrols, 869 fuel station drop-ins and 1105 business walk-throughs in the three weeks since the operation started.

“I know policing, on the front line in particular, demand is on them quite heavily.

“The extra police patrols are completed by police over and above their rostered shifts. So it does not impact our ability to respond to crime.”

The rollout came after the death of Logan man Aiden Bower-Miles who was allegedly stabbed by two teenagers in February, and the announcement of new laws from the state government which included bringing in breach of bail as an offence.

Police have conducted more than 900 bail checks so far during the operation and referred more than 100 people to support agencies.

Since the start of the operation police have conducted more than 2400 hours of proactive policing, which has included 2011 engagements with the community.

Mr Wheeler said officers seemed to be eager to take on the extra shifts to help combat the issues.

“I’ve been pleasantly surprised and I’m really happy with the uptake.”
