Two teenagers have been charged with the stabbing murder of 20-year-old Logan man Aiden Rhys Bower-Miles.
The 15-year-old and 16-year-old boys were both charged after being arrested overnight.
Mr Bower-Miles was stabbed in the neck and died during an altercation at Underwood, south of Brisbane, about 1am on Friday.
The teenagers appeared in Brisbane Arrests Court where an application for media to be allowed in the courtroom was declined.
Several media organisations including The Courier-Mail argued that it was “in the public interest” and in the interests of “the principles of justice” to be granted access.
The following response was received: “The application has been declined as the court is not in a position to make any proper determination under the Youth Justice Act regarding this application.”
Police will allege Mr Bower-Miles was coming home from a party with a group of friends when they became involved in a fight with the two teenagers on Fermont St.
South Eastern Regional Crime Co-ordinator Detective Superintendent Brendan Smith said the two accused boys were allegedly sitting in a parked Audi at the end of the street “smoking drugs”.
“It would appear there has been a chance meeting and a conflict has arisen,” Supt Smith said.
“There was a bit of conflict, verbal conflict … (which) turned into a physical altercation.
“Just a conflict … who is the tougher group.”
During the altercation, Mr Bower-Miles was stabbed in the neck.
Supt Smith said he initially didn’t realise he was injured.
“It would appear no one knew he had been stabbed … he seemed to realise something was wrong and asked his friends to call police and ambulance and collapsed.”
The two accused teens fled in the dark-coloured Audi and took themselves to Queensland Elizabeth II Jubilee Hospital about 7am on Friday for some assault-related injuries they also suffered in the fight.
Police tracked them both down late on Friday afternoon, arresting the 16-year-old Logan boy at a Gold Coast shopping centre where they also found the dark Audi.
The 15-year-old boy was arrested at a Mount Gravatt East home.
Superintendent Smith said he was incredibly frustrated that young people were still carrying knives as weapons.
“We’ve been taking about it for a long time. Had they not had a knife we wouldn’t be here today,” he said.
“A young person has been murdered over no good reason, absolute rubbish really.
“There’s no valid reason to carry a knife. I don’t care what anyone says, you don’t carry a knife.”
Neither of the accused had a serious offending history and the two groups were not known to each other.
Superintendent Smith also ruled out any gang affiliations and said they believe no one else was involved.
Police have appealed to the public for footage of the black Audi sedan with a number plate that may be hanging at an angle on the car bearing the registration 448GF5.
The Audi is thought to have travelled between Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Coopers Plains and the Helensvale Shopping Centre on Milaroo Dr between 7am and 4pm Friday.
Information to Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
“Every piece of information helps investigators, no matter how small or insignificant you may feel it is,” Supt Smith said.
The 15-year-old boy was also charged with one court of fail to provide access to data (electronics).
The 16-year-old boy was also charged with one count of possess dangerous drugs – cannabis (child under 18).
Hundreds of friends and family gathered on Friday afternoon to honour Mr Bower-Miles by releasing red balloons in the air.
His loved ones gathered at the Jacobs Well boat ramp.
Kristy Broadhead posted on social media footage of hundreds of people counting down and releasing red balloons into the air.

“I know you would have been watching over everyone last night,” Annika Smith said.
Cars turned up with RIP Aiden written on their windscreens, and one friend made stickers to honour their friend who they called Wombat.
Each sticker was sold for $10 and the money raised was to go towards funeral expenses.
The sticker read Rest In Peace Aiden Wombat Raider 05.09.2002 to 24.02.2023.
The stickers received an overwhelming response, and the friend said she would be making more after she was bombarded with support at the meet.
