British man made throat slashing gesture to ex at shops, called her 43 times

A man who made a threatening gesture to his former partner at a major Brisbane shopping centre, and called her more than 40 times despite being ordered not to, has appeared in court.

How COVID-19 has trapped another vulnerable group

A man followed his former partner to her gym where he stared at her until she fled out the gym’s back door.

Another time she saw him at the shops where he made a throat-slashing gesture.

He called her more than 40 times, despite a domestic violence order calling him not to.

The 26-year-old British man, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty at Pine Rivers Magistrates Court to breaching a domestic violence order and a police protection order.

The court heard the man repeatedly phoned his former partner, in breach of the order, from a mobile phone and a blocked number.

The woman told him to stop calling her and that she did not want to hear from him again.

She reported to police he made 43 calls to her phone.

On another occasion she and a male friend were at Chermside Shopping Centre and saw the man there.

He stared at her and made a throat-slitting gesture towards her.

The court heard the woman began going to regular gym sessions while they were dating. After they broke up she continued going to the sessions.

While she was at one of her regular sessions she saw him inside the gym staring at her.

She hid in a back room and left out a back entrance before calling friends and family to come and get her.

The man’s defence lawyer Shaun Kolo told the court his client knew his actions had been “foolish” and as he was not a citizen he faced deportation if he kept offending.

Mr Kolo said the gym had cancelled the man’s membership since the offence.

The man was sentenced to six months prison, suspended for 18 months.
