Cathy Tucker was fast slipping in to a diabetic coma when her quick-thinking son Daniel launched in to action.

“She was reading to me and she started not being funny and shaking and lay down and said: ‘I can’t read this anymore,’ and I was thinking: “That is not right,” Daniel said.

Now nine years old, Daniel, who lives in Berowra Heights, was eight at the time and immediately realised what was going on - his diabetic mother desperately needed sugar.

“I was worried, but I was just thinking about what I needed to do,” Daniel said.

He found her a packet of chips, lollies and a can of solo.

He grabbed her phone and started calling through a list of family and friends, eventually getting on to his older brother, Nick: “I told him that mum was having a hypo and he came with Dad.”

Daniel’s parents have separated, but live on the same street, so they arrived quickly and praised his actions.

“It was pretty stressful, but mum said: ‘Thank you,’” Daniel said.

Mrs Tucker, 47, has been an insulin-dependent diabetic since she was 15 and also has cystic fibrosis.

“So I have a bit on my plate,” she said.

Daniel’s dad, Wayne, said he was proud of Daniel.

“I am convinced that this little guy has saved her life this time,” he said.

Daniel’s quick thinking kept his mum conscious and prevented a diabetic coma and it has earned the year 4 student at Wideview Public School a nomination in the Child of Courage category of the Pride of Australia awards.

The Pride of Australia awards are a creation of News Corp Australia’s newspapers, including the Hornsby Advocate.
