The former WWII Spitfire pilot has dedicated more than 60 years to Legacy and is still driving war widows to functions today in Dubbo.

“I joined legacy in 1963 and have been all over the country including Brisbane and Sydney. I have continuous service,” Mr Winslow said.

“I think it’s a good opportunity to help widows of ex-service people. Every year we have a Mother’s Day function and Christmas function. In Dubbo we have 80 war widows.”

Accepting his medal from Daily Telegraph editor Christopher Dore, and overwhelmed Mr Winslow said: “I was never a hero but I’m still going strong.

“I’m overwhelmed by how this city has advanced since I was least here and can’t wait to get back to Dubbo quick enough.”

Inspired by the Liberty Medal established by the New York Post in the wake of the September 11 attacks, Pride of Australia, championed by the Daily Telegraph, underpins the notion there is no greater measure of a society’s strength than its ability to recognise, learn from and reward its true heroes.
