North shore volunteer gains more than just recognition for ongoing work with new mothers
THERE is nothing more inspiring than seeing the people you help go out in to the world with a smile on their face, and that is what keeps north shore volunteer Kate Kesby going.

IT is no overstatement to say that Kate Kesby’s whole life revolves around volunteering.
Not only does the Riverview resident contribute three hours out of her packed weekly schedule to mentor new mothers, her consulting business Juggle Strategies carries through her passion for volunteering - by helping companies enforce flexibility in the workplace.
“I feel quite passionately that everyone should be able to make time for their community and that you do get a pay off in terms of your health and a feeling of wellbeing,” the busy mother-of-three said, adding that she felt inspired when she saw the women she helped go out in the world on their own.
“You should have flexibility for whatever it is that you need and volunteering is one of those things (yet) people have these nine to five jobs and they feel like they can’t get out.”
Ms Kesby’s work for Raise Foundation with mothers who are pregnant or have had a baby to help them with parenting and women’s issues earned her the title of Sydney North Volunteer of the Year last week.
“This program (has) exposed me to whole other walks of life and challenges which I wouldn’t have experienced.
“It’s challenged all the stereotypes that I thought I knew,” she reflected.
“I see hope in people, that’s not the end of their story, they’ve just lost their way and they need someone to give them a hand.”
Often people think they lack the skills to make a meaningful contribution, Ms Kesby said, but reaching out to give help could pay off.
“They might be surprised that they are able to contribute in ways that they might not have even thought of, if they just ask what they could do.”
