Police believe a fatal single-vehicle accident on the Gold Coast over the weekend involving an elderly moped rider was a “freak accident”.
The 75-year-old Mudgeeraba man was riding a moped amid wet conditions on Hinkler Drive at Highland Park on Saturday when it left the road and slammed into a tree.
Paramedics and police arrived on the scene just before 11.30am, where they located the man lying nearby in bushland.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Forensic Crash Unit investigations are ongoing.
On Monday morning, Queensland Police Acting Chief Superintendent Peter Miles said police believed the crash to be a “freak accident [that] could have” been exacerbated by wet, greasy conditions.
“It appears from initial investigations that the front wheel of that moped has actually collided with a gutter causing the rider to be ejected into the roadside,” Superintendent Miles said.
“Unfortunately his injuries were so severe that he was unable to survive.
“[There] wasn’t excessive speed at all, just a freak accident and it’s cost another life.”
Superintendent Miles confirmed the moped rider was wearing a helmet at the time of his death.
He highlighted the ever-climbing 2025 Queensland road toll, which stands at 135 at the time of writing.
“That’s 135 lives, 135 families that are affected by this. We just ask for people to take their time and remain vigilant on the road,” Superintendent Miles said.
