New Year’s nonsense

POLICE poured out five litres of grog onto the street to punish badly behaved revellers who decided to welcome the New Year by embracing chaos.

A NT Police spokeswoman said New Year’s Eve crowds in Darwin and Alice Springs were generally well-behaved, despite 16 arrests across the Territory.

“Police were generally happy with the behaviour of NYE revellers across the NT,” she said.

Sixteen people started their New Year by waking up in the local drunk tank, with police apprehending seven people in Darwin and nine in Alice Springs under Protective Custody arrangements.

Despite a snap mask mandate announcement around 4000 people attended Darwin’s Waterfront celebrations, with the party lasting late into the night as crowds moved into the city following the midnight fireworks.

Seven people were arrested in Darwin for their New Year’s antics.

Two people were given summary infringements and another 86 people were told to move on while partying in Darwin.

Police also tipped out at least five litres of liquor after partygoers were busted with the open containers outside licenced venues in Darwin.

Police said there was a large crowd in the Alice Springs casino as the community counted down to midnight together.

Five people were arrested in Alice Springs on New Year’s, with two more given a notice to appear in the Local Court after their wild night out.

And the bad behaviour wasn’t just limited to the pubs and clubs, with police nabbing four drunk drivers on the roads.

Police said three people were arrested for drunk driving in Alice Springs, with another two given traffic infringement notices.

In Darwin, a brazen drunk driver reversed his car in full view of a police patrol at 3am.

Police said the 30-year-old driver was busted on Darwin Esplanade pulling the boozy manoeuvre.

He was arrested and later returned a positive breath test analysis of 0.144 blood alcohol concentration, almost three times the legal limit.

Hours before the traditional midnight countdown the Territory government made a snap announcement that masks were mandatory in all indoor venues.

Police were unable to confirm how many fines or cautions were given for breaches of the Chief Health Officer’s directions.

Some criminals took advantage of the New Year’s festivities to take advantage of partygoers in Alice Springs.

Southern Watch Commander Andrew Heath said police spent the first hours of 2022 responding to reports of an assault of a 66-year-old woman, and an unrelated Maccas break-in.

He alleged the woman was approached by a youth as she entered her motel room in the town centre at 2.10am.

Mr Heath said she was knocked to the ground, resulting in injuries to her hip and grazed her knees, before the youth ran off with her handbag.

Two hours later a youth allegedly kicked in the glass door at the Alice Springs McDonald’s to steal cash.

Mr Heath said a 16-year-old was arrested in connection to the incident.

He said Strike Force Viper officers were investigating both Alice Springs incidents.
