A wild brawl at a junior soccer game that began on-field before moving into the stands in Sydney’s western suburbs on Saturday is being investigated by police.
Shocking video captured the moment punches flew at the game between Granville Rage and Camden Tigers at Rydalmere Park, before overflowing into the stands – with spectators then becoming involved.
One woman in a hijab could be seen at the centre of the fight in the video, throwing punches at one man’s face and then grabbing another individual in a headlock.
Police believe a player left the field and attacked a man in the crowd, who had to be taken to hospital. No charges have been laid.
In a statement, NSW Police said they are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.
“Officers from Ryde Police Area Command are investigating after a brawl in Sydney’s northwest over the weekend,” the statement read.
“About 3pm on Saturday 5 August 2023, two groups were playing a soccer match at an oval on Park Road, Rydalmere, when an on-field fight broke out.
“Police have been told a player left the field and approached a spectator before assaulting a 42-year-old man who sustained an injury to his wrist. The man was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.
“Players and spectators attempted to break up the fight while others became involved.
“As police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, anyone who witnessed the incident or may have mobile phone vision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
The Daily Telegraph contacted Football NSW who said they had been made aware of the brawl and had a “zero-tolerance policy” for any incidents.
“Football NSW is aware of an incident that took place at a match on Saturday and has opened an investigation into the matter. No further comment will be made on the matter,” a spokesman for the sport’s governing body said.
“Football NSW adopts a zero-tolerance policy to any form of violence at sanctioned events and is committed to promoting a safe and enjoyable environment for all football participants.”
