Ten months after a horror fall in Hong Kong left him in a wheelchair, jockey Tye Angland will be back at the racetrack tomorrow — this time as a television pundit.
Angland, 30, will be joining host Bruce McAvaney as a guest panellist on Channel 7s Epsom Day coverage from Royal Randwick.
“I have been back to the track a handful of times since the accident and this is a great opportunity to come back as a guest commentator,” Angland said on Thursday.
The beloved racing figure was left a quadriplegic after a fall at Sha Tin in Hong Kong in November.
He returned to Sydney for treatment and is now at home with wife Erin and their three children.
“I have got really good people around me that really help and I feed off them,” he said. “I keep busy and enjoy the little things.”
But if his time in front of the camera goes well that could see him becoming a lot busier with Channel 7 racing bosses keen to bring his expertise from the jockeys’ room.
“All my best mates are down in the room. If I can get back down there and provide something to the viewers that someone else hasn’t that would be great,” he said.
“I have had some experience on camera but normally I am talking about my own rides. I will have to do a lot more work on the form.”
Angland will be on the Epsom Day panel with former jockey Katelyn Mallyon and media personality and trainer Richard Freedman.
Channel 7 Head of Sport Lewis Martin said: “Tye has a great passion for, and knowledge of racing.”
Angland said he will fit any future TV commitments around his rehabilitation.
“I spoke to my surgeon yesterday and people who have had the triceps operation that I have can lift between zero and 2kg. So there is work to do,” he said.
