AFTER continually suffering broken noses and black eyes early in his Kings Cross career, John Ibrahim’s older brother assigned Tongan Sam to watch over him.
John was initially reluctant, but in the decades since he has come to consider the giant security guard, whose real name is Semi Ngata, as a brother and member of the Ibrahim clan.
In his recently released book, John Ibrahim said it was one-time bikie boss Sam Ibrahim who ordered John to take on Tongan Sam as a security detail after he had taken another beating working on the door of his Kings Cross club, The Tunnel.
“(Sam) points out my battered head and says to Tongan Sam ‘If I see John and I don’t see you within two metres, I going to kneecap both of you’,” John Ibrahim wrote in the book.
After an uneasy adjustment period, the pair formed a bond that exists to this day to the point where Tongan Sam lives on the same Merrylands street as Ibrahim’s mother.
“In fact the whole family inherited a brother,” Ibrahim wrote.
“Even blood couldn’t make us closer”.

In the time since, there has rarely been a photo taken of Ibrahim in public without the more than two metre giant looming over him.
According to Ibrahim, Tongan Sam rarely speaks, but he is not paid for his speaking skills.
“Sam is brutal when he fights but he also has finesse,” Ibrahim wrote.
“He is so good at taking blokes down that, like a professional tree chopper, he can choose where he wants the guy to hit the ground when he falls …”
Only, on Friday night, it was Tongan Sam who took the fall.
In 2014, he showed the dedication to his boss, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with John’s face across it.
