A man’s body has been found in the middle of a residential street in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, in what police suspect is a hit and run.

Police have issued a public appeal for witnesses and further CCTV as they piece together the murky circumstances that led to a 28-year-old man dying in the middle of an eastern suburbs street.

The young man, described as slim-built and Caucasian with brown hair who was wearing a blue button-up shirt and tan shorts at the time of his death, is believed to be from the local area.

Detective Assistant Superintendent Adam Solah confirmed some of the man’s local family members have been contacted.

“The family are obviously very upset and distraught, and our hearts go out to them, having to find out such difficult news,” he said.

Police have obtained “extensive” footage from the scene but could not yet confirm whether the death was a hit-and-run; a theory that is “forming part of our lines of inquiry” while police are “looking at all avenues”, Det Solah said.

“We encourage anyone who has dash cam footage or … CCTV that hasn’t been yet provided to police, we urge you to come forward and provide that footage.”

Anyone who may have seen the man described by police, or was any way involved in the incident, is also urged to contact Bondi police or CrimeStoppers.

Police and paramedics were called to Fletcher Street in Tamarama shortly after 4am to find the man critically injured with head injuries.

Despite attempts to resuscitate the man, he died at the scene.

Eastern suburbs police have established a crime scene and the Crash Investigation Unit has been called in to investigate the circumstances of the death, and whether heavy rain overnight was a factor.

A blue police rescue tent was placed across the body while police investigated on Sunday morning.

Several uniformed officers and investigators were on the scene as of 10am, and were seen removing brown paper bags and laying out yellow evidence markers.

Detectives arrived just before 11am to doorknock and interview neighbours.

A resident in an apartment block directly opposite where the body was found said he and other neighbours knew nothing of the incident until they woke up to find a police tent outside their home.

“No one heard anything, at all,” the man, who declined to be named, said.

However, the bend of the road is a notorious blind spot he said, with motorists frequently travelling too fast and crossing the double white lines.

Shortly after 11am, the man’s body was removed in a coroners van before firefighters were called in to mop up the grisly scene.

The Fire and Rescue NSW crew doused the street.

Police are appealing for information from the public to establish how the man came to be injured.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.
