Vivid bursts onto Sydney Harbour with a light show of huge, incandescent bubbles

A froth of 150 transparent bubbles lit from within have appeared on Sydney Harbour as Vivid returns for the first time since 2019.

Vivid returns to Sydney after two years in the dark

There’s something bubbling in the harbour this winter.

Huge, glowing spheres dotted along Walsh Bay as part of Vivid Sydney have made the water appear like a shimmering bubble bath.

The light sculpture, called Ephemeral Oceanic, is one of 50 installations bursting onto the city’s CBD as part of an 8km light walk stretching from Circular Quay to Central Station.

The 150 transparent bubbles are lit from within and change colour as a soundtrack murmurs alongside.

“It was quite magical,” said Sarah Borg, who was treated to a sneak peak of the work by Australian team Atelier Sisu along with daughters Lily, 16, Jasmine, 13 and Laura, 8.

“I think it is going to be a highlight this year. We are definitely planning to bring the family back to see the full line up,” she said.

Vivid lights up this Friday, until June 18, for the first time since 2019 with a program of more than 200 events.
