Two young male Asian elephants arrive at Sydney Zoo

A lonely 62-year-old Asian elephant finally has had the chance to again meet her own kind at her new home at Sydney Zoo — with the arrival of two young male elephants.

For more than a decade she was one of the world’s loneliest elephants, living a solitary life after retiring from an Australian circus.

Saigon had lived with a flock of sheep, a donkey and a miniature pony, as her ageing, caring owners searched for a new home for the 62-year-old, Asian elephant.

Finally she found the right place to stay at Sydney Zoo and has had the chance to again meet her own kind — newly arrived Asian elephants Kavi and Ashoka.

The bulls are both just over six years old — Kavi is quiet and reserved, while Ashoka, who is just a month junior but acts a lot younger, is the more confident and playful of the pair.

They will give Saigon the chance to become a matriarch.

And their arrival from Europe is set to make a big impact on the Asian elephant population in Australasia with both bulls — who’ve already fathered many young across Europe — taking part in important regional breeding and conservation programs.

Asian Elephants are found across South East Asia, however there are fewer than 50,000 remaining in the wild, making breeding programs important.
