Singer Shannon Noll dragged a dying woman from a burning car and performed CPR after he came across a horrific double fatal accident a short distance from his northern NSW home.
Kobi Roberts-Walker, 18, and his girlfriend Jaselle Melrose, 18, were less than 10 kilometres from their home at Ellangowan, south of Casino, when their car left the roadway and slammed into a tree on Saturday night.
Noll, who was on his way back to his family property, was one of the first passers-by to come across the horrific crash, which happened on a notorious section of road with limited lighting, just before 9pm.
The former Australian Idol told The Daily Telegraph he did everything he could to save the dying woman.
“Last night was such a tragedy. I just reacted and did what I could to assist the young woman at the scene,” he said.
“Our prayers and condolences go out to their families at this terribly sad time”.
Noll’s manager Paul Paoliello said the singer was “pretty shaken” from the ordeal.
A volunteer rescue worker who was at the scene when Noll stopped said the singer ‘literally ran’ to the mangled car and pulled the passenger from the front seat, as flames took hold of the vehicle.
“He’s pretty much got her away from the car as much as he could and heroically done what he could before the police and that arrived,” the volunteer worker said.
“There were others involved too, but I’ll give it to the bloke, he wasn’t going to stand back, he got in there and did what he could”.
Paramedics arrived and did everything they could to save Ms Melrose, but she died at the scene.
Mr Roberts-Walker, who friends described as “someone everyone around here knows”, died on impact.
“Everyone knows him … the whole community is heartbroken,” a friend Jess said.
On social media, Shjneke Walker wrote “RIP my little shadows”.
Just last month, Mr Roberts-Walker posted the couple’s car up for sale, saying they needed to upgrade as they were expecting a baby.
“Everything runs fine … just needs a wheel alignment. Only reason we are selling is we are wanting a bigger car due to expecting a baby,” he wrote on November 28.
Ms Melrose graduated from Casino High School last year, where she was mentioned multiple times on newsletters for her academic achievements.
It is understood Mr Roberts-Walker was from Casino but recently moved to Ellangowan to live with Ms Melrose and her family.
The crash happened not far from where Noll and his wife Rochelle relocated with their five children last year for a “tree change” after years of living in Sydney.
Locals said the section of Ellangowan Rd where the accident occurred is a notorious accident spot due to the narrow roadway and lack of lighting.
NSW Police are investigating the cause of the crash and whether speed was a factor.
