Public Service Association general secretary said the fight illustrated the dangerous nature of work in a prison system which is at capacity.
“These guys have shivs and stuff so it shows just how volatile the job is,” Mr Stewart said.
Nine ambulance crews and a specialist medical team were deployed to the jail, with five patients assessed by paramedics.
Two inmates understood to have puncture wounds were taken to Prince of Wales and St Vincent’s hospitals for treatment.
