Tweed Shire Council approves four storey, 25 apartment complex on Marine Parade at Kingscliff

Tweed council has ticked off on a four-storey apartment complex project featuring 25 new homes in the middle of a growing coastal town. Check out the plans.

A four-storey apartment complex project costing $17 million has been approved for Marine Parade in the middle of Kingscliff in the Tweed.

Tweed Shire Council unanimously approved Sydney developer Allera’s proposal to build two apartment buildings at 140-142 Marine Parade, just 250 metres from the town centre.

The project will see existing structures bulldozed to make way for the glitzy new build, which will include 25 new residences, mostly with three bedrooms.

Kingscliff is growing and just down the road is Cudgen, the site of the new $723m Tweed Valley Hospital, which is due to open early next year.

The approval comes as the council and local governments across northern NSW have been speaking about addressing the growing need for housing by approving higher density developments.

Councillor Nola Firth asked that two trees be included in the build on Marine Parade and Pearl St.

“This is about precedent,” she said.

She said it was important “we don’t sacrifice urban cooling or biodiversity.” when ticking off on “increased density” projects.

“Trees are actually known to increase the value of a property,” she said.

“They create cooling, they create happiness for people, they filter the air.”

Councillor James Owen said there were not too many trees on Marine Pde for a reason.

“Part of the reason people live there is so they can have largely in an uninterrupted views of the ocean, so putting a big tree there … I don't know if that would actually increase the value of those properties,” he said.

The amendment regarding the added trees was shot down four votes to three.

Mayor Chris Cherry, Deputy Mayor Meredith Dennis and Cr Firth voted for the trees, while councillors Owen, Warren Polglase, Reece Byrnes and Rhiannon Brinsmead voted against.
