A $4.2 million childcare centre with room for almost 110 kids has been approved for a vacant lot across the road from Terranora Public School.
It comes as North Coast parents and early educators cry out for more childcare places to meet booming demand.
After Tweed Shire Council’s approval, Brisbane developers Griffith Group One Pty Ltd can now forge forward with plans to build the centre at 647 Terranora Road, Terranora.
The centre spanning two buildings is set to have room for 109 kids.
The structures on the 4000 square metre site will be separated by an outdoor play space.
Signage in an artist impression of the build indicates the centre will likely be operated by “holistic childcare education” provider Eden Academy.
A two-storey building will be built housing four childcare rooms, two sleep areas, a prep room, kitchen and laundry.
A southern building will include two more childcare rooms, a prep room and storage.
About 20 staff will be needed to operate from 6am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.
The centre is set to welcome children aged between zero and five.
The project is due to include 35 car parks.
Council’s nod comes after the organisation approved a childcare centre for 48 children and 10 staff at the same site back in 2019.
Tweed Mayor Chris Cherry said the approval was a “very positive step forward” when it came to local childcare needs
“There is always a very strong demand for childcare places in our shire,” she said.
Councillors voted unanimously to approve the childcare centre at Thursday’s meeting.
