DETAILS of NSW government approval of a concept plan for a proposed new township of 5500 homes at Cobaki Lakes on the Queensland border are still to be provided to Tweed Shire Council.
Mayor Kevin Skinner yesterday said he expected the council to receive details, including plans for new roads, later this week following announcement of the approval by Planning Minister Tony Kelly in a sudden visit to the site west of the Gold Coast Airport early yesterday morning.
Cr Skinner said he also expected the development application for the first subdivision of 1200 lots to be lodged with the council by development group Leda, which is headed by billionaire Bob Ell, within a week.
He believed that application would show plans to highlight the intersection of Boyd Street and the Gold Coast Highway on the Gold Coast to “accommodate the flow of people in and out of the estate”.
Mr Kelly, in a prepared media statement, said the Cobaki Lakes project would provide much-needed additional housing in a fast-growing region.
“This site has been zoned residential and identified for urban release for at least 20 years and is included in the Far North Coast Regional Strategy as one of the sites that will help achieve the region’s housing targets,” the statement said.
“Cobaki estate will potentially provide housing for up to 12,000 people over the next 20 years and would account for about 30 per cent of the regional strategy’s target for 19,100 new homes on the Far North Coast over the next two decades.”
