NEW South Wales Fair Trading has announced new residential tenancy laws, which include more than 100 changes to the rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords.

Both the Residential Tenancies Act 2010 and the Residential Tenancies Regulation 2010 came into effect on Monday and are the biggest changes to the laws in 20 years.

Northern Rivers Community Legal centre senior tenants advocate Deirdre Dowsett said the new act included many positive changes.

“The new laws include better protection for victims of domestic violence and tenants must be given at least one way to pay their rent without incurring a fee,” Ms Dowsett said.

Ray White Tweed Heads principal Kaeren Smith said any changes to tenancy laws could be difficult at first.

“The new laws seem to be on the side of the tenant a little and people who are renting privately may need to look at professional help,” Ms Smith said.

“There are more than 100 changes but I think any new changes to the tenancy laws can be positive.”
