CHRISTMAS holidays are the perfect opportunity for handymen and women to spruce up their backyard or finally finish renovations that have been on the backburner all year.

Hardware giant Bunnings hopes to help families with their projects in 2011 by offering a number of free workshops.

“Undertaking a D.I.Y project is a cost-effective way to renovate your home, and the workshops are free as well,” Bunnings South Tweed Heads manager Wayne Thomas said.

The weekend events will kick off in the new year and include free do-it-yourself workshops at the Bunnings Warehouse, South Tweed Heads store which will feature handy advice and tips and tricks from the expert team.

Participants will learn how to erect shade sails, renovate their outdoor living areas, maintain swimming pools and how to build, clean and seal a timber deck.

“Two of the most popular workshops we hold are focused around garden and paving,” Mr Thomas said.

“Outdoor and garden renovations are popular all year round because of the tropical coastal climate that Tweed Heads enjoys.”

A number of indoor workshops will cover projects like childproofing the home and managing pest control.

Another will focus be on energy efficiency and will offer tips for how to save power in the home.

Bunnings has previously targeted handywomen with their workshops, but these free workshops are targeted at getting the entire family involved.

There will also be workshops for kids. “Our free kids D.I.Ys will be popular, especially over the school holidays,” Mr Thomas said.

“In January the kids will learn how to make boomerangs, mosaic coasters and calendars.”

Workshops are held Saturdays and Sundays throughout December and January, with morning and afternoon classes on offer.
