A contentious, multimillion-dollar plan to build 15 two storey townhouses in the state’s north are back on the cards – after a series of changes.

The proposal, earmarked for Tweed Heads West, would see the existing home bulldozed to make way for a “multi-dwelling housing” estate on Lalina Ave – right in the middle of existing homes.

The almost 7000sq m site is surrounded by houses on all sides.

The proposal was initially refused by Tweed Shire Council on June 5, after council found it “not suitable” after “community views were considered”.

But now the developer is back and pushing to have the proposal approved, after the project was scaled down.

“The proposal provides outstanding architectural merit consistent with the architectural character of the local area.” ELKN planning director Lance Newley said.

The developer has reduced the proposed building height from 10.5m to 8m, and made the fencing “compliant”.

The developer has also more than doubled the landscape area on the property from 1270 square meters to 2640 square meters – reducing the number of trees proposed to be cut down from 16 to 12.

The developer has also proposed to now “translocate” an existing rough-shelled bush nut tree instead of bulldozing it following the initial refusal.

The development application will remain on exhibition for 30 days. Community members can have their say through the Tweed Shire website.
