Shocking footage: Violent attack involving teens in Tweed Heads

A shocking video has emerged of a group of young people unleashing a violent attack in Tweed Heads.

A Tweed resident, who asked to remain anonymous, raised concerns about violent behaviour in the local area after a 17-year-old boy was charged with attempted murder in relation to an alleged stabbing near the intersection of Blundell Boulevard and Minjungbal Drive.

A video released to News Corp depicts a separate incident outside the Tweed Mall shopping centre on Wharf Street in Tweed Heads.

In the video, two people are pictured being thrown to the ground by a group before one of the victims has his head stomped on and kicked several times.

In the original video – which has been edited for legal reasons – one of the victims can be heard sounding distressed and hurt as a member of the group mocks him.

The resident who supplied the video expressed deep concerns about the behaviour.

“I really think these videos need to be addressed as they seem to be getting away with it and these attacks are getting worse each time,” the resident said.

Police confirmed in a statement they were investigating an assault at the shopping centre.

“Sometime between 9.40pm on Sunday, June 14 and midnight on Monday, June 14 2021, a 24-year-old man was seated near a carpark at a shopping centre on Wharf Street, Tweed Heads, when he was approached by three teenagers,” police said.

“The man was punched to the head and knocked unconscious, before being pushed to the ground and repeatedly assaulted by the group.

“The group left the man a short time later and did not render assistance.”

Although the incident was not initially reported to police, officers were notified and began investigations on June 16.

“The man was not seriously injured in the assault,” police said.

“As inquiries continue, anyone who may have any information which could assist investigators is urged to contact Tweed Heads Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

Tweed Byron Police District crime manager Detective Chief Inspector Brendon Cullen said local officers were taking proactive steps to tackle violent crime.

“Our youth liaison officer works closely with local high schools and shopping centres where youths tend to congregate,” Inspector Cullen said.

“Engaging directly with the school networks has led to certain at-risk students being successfully diverted to programs such as the PCYC Rise Up strategy.

“We also hope that through working with the schools directly, we can also target youth crime from the grassroots level – trying to navigate teens down a positive path before having to interact with them on the streets.

He said police monitor locations where youths gathered and where youth crime could occur.

“Our officers will continue to undertake this high-visibility approach in an attempt to boost community confidence within their own communities,” he said.
