A man and two youths have faced court charged over a slow-motion police pursuit which started in Brisbane and ended in the Tweed.
The chase which crossed from Queensland onto the Pacific Highway at Tweed Heads about 12.20pm on Thursday involved a string of police vehicles tailing a car, allegedly occupied by Tyson Murphy-Mickey and two boys, aged 16 and 17.
It’s alleged police were initially called to a break and enter in the Brisbane area and the Mercedes Benz was driven from the scene and headed south.
Tyson Murphy-Mickey, 28, was the first of the three alleged offenders to front Tweed Heads Local Court on Friday morning.
He has been charged with two counts of receiving stolen property.
It’s alleged the three males were found with two swords, a knife, tomahawk, cannabis and cash.
The court heard Murphy-Mickey was allegedly sitting in the back of the Mercedes, alleged to be stolen, as he and the co-accused failed to stop at the Queensland-New South Wales border.
Road spikes were deployed at the Cudgen Rd Tunnel, near Tweed Valley Way, before the Mercedes stopped at Cudgera Creek.
Magistrate Annette Sinclair said Queensland Police wanted to extradite Murphy-Mickey for unresolved matters including contravening an AVO.
Murphy-Mickey’s defence lawyer said the accused’s crime was “less in severity” compared to the co-accused “because he was sitting in the back” of the car.
The defence asked for the matter to be finalised, as Murphy-Micke sat wearing a navy Lacoste T-shirt, smirking and shoeless.
Magistrate Sinclair said NSW Police needed more time to make inquiries.
“What further inquiries?” Murphy-Mickey yelled across the court.
Ms Sinclair responded: “I’m not sure yet.”
The case was adjourned to Monday and no application for bail was sought.
The 17-year-old alleged to be the driver has been charged with instigating a police pursuit, driving with a suspended licence, two counts of receive property stolen outside NSW and possessing a prohibited drug.
The 16-year-old passenger has been charged with receiving property stolen outside NSW, use an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and travelling in or on a part of a vehicle not intended for passengers or goods.
The juveniles were due to appear via video link on Friday afternoon.
