An elderly woman has been “tricked” before having her car stolen at Tweed Heads – just down the road from the local police station.
A video of the Tweed Heads incident was shared by Dash Cam Owners Australia on Facebook. Tweed Byron Police have since become involved.
Police state emergency services were called to Wharf St “following reports a vehicle had been stolen” about 3.30pm on Wednesday.
“Police have been told that when a 73-year-old woman returned to her parked vehicle and unlocked it, an unidentified man allegedly entered the same vehicle, locked the doors and drove away from the scene,” a spokesman said.
“Officers attached to Tweed-Byron Police district commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police “are seeking community assistance in identifying the person pictured”.
Police believe man with red shoes in the video “can assist with police inquiries”.
A caption on the social media post claims: “It was a carjacking, an elderly woman was tricked by the gentleman holding the drink saying a flat tyre.”
“He drove off. Across from the Tweed Heads Police Station.”
The footage depicts a man wearing a cap with distinctive red shoes holding a drink and approaching a parked white SUV.
The man with the cap appears to climb into the SUV and lock the doors, while the elderly woman is seen in distress as three member of the public come to help.
The owner of the dash cam reverses behind the woman’s car in an attempt to prevent the theft.
But the SUV speeds away as the woman puts her head in her hands and bends over, seemingly in defeat.
Police have urged anyone with information to phone Tweed Heads Police Station on 07 55069499 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
