Police are investigating a string of caravan thefts and attempted thefts in a Tweed beach town popular among holiday-makers.
Tweed/Byron Police District have been looking into the thefts in the Pottsville area – and have urged the community to secure trailers and vans to stop more opportunistic crimes.
Police state “unknown persons” attempted to steal a caravan from a Toshack Place address about 9.20pm on November 18, but failed.
Then crooks stole a 1990 white Roadstar caravan (registration V74450) from an address on Tweed Coast Rd sometime between 7pm on November 21 and 11.30am on November 22.
The van has still not been found, police confirmed on Monday.
Another caravan was then stolen from a property on Mylestom Circuit between 2am and 3.30am on November 23.
That caravan was found, but it was destroyed, seemingly while being towed.
Police believe it was involved in a crash and then abandoned.
Police have urged anyone with information or CCTV footage which may help find the culprits to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Police have reminded the community to be careful to secure vans “to help reduce stealing incidents”.
• If the caravan is stored at home, put it in the back or side yard out of sight.
• If storing in an open driveway or carport, park another vehicle in front of the caravan.
• Purchase a good quality trailer hitch lock and use it, even if stored inside.
• Store caravans in a secure caravan storage facility.
