Police are on the hunt for a couple who drove to the top floor of Tweed City shopping centre, smashed windows and drove through glass sliding doors before making a dash for it with stolen jewellery.
The getaway car was later found burnt out at Tamborine Mountain in Queensland.
NSW Police believe the vehicle was stolen earlier from a Waterford address in Queensland, with officers from that state assisting them with their inquiries.
Detective Chief Inspector Brendon Cullen said police were called to the shopping centre in relation to a break and enter at Prouds The Jewellers about 5am yesterday (November 13).
“It appears a motor vehicle has rammed its way into the shopping centre and to a jewellery store,” Mr Cullen said.
“A male and a female are believed to have taken a quantity of property from the jewellery story at the shopping centre.”
After using their car like a weapon, the pair got out of the vehicle and set about smashing windows at the shopping centre entrance.
The pair then returned to their car, a grey Santa Fe sedan, and drove it through the glass sliding doors into the centre, gaining entry into the jewellers.
Mr Cullen said the incident was unusual: “We don’t have many issues with such brazen displays and disregard for the community.
“It’s clear the people who were involved in this knew what they wanted and where they needed to go to get it.”
After hitting Prouds, the pair drove from the shopping centre.
As investigations continue, police are urging for witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to contact Tweed Heads police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
