A man has been charged with leading police on a car chase, holding a woman against her will and ramming a police car on the North Coast. Here’s what we know.

A man has been charged with leading police on a car chase, holding a woman against her will and ramming a police car at Tweed Heads South.

Matthew O’Conner, 34, has been charged with stalking/intimidation with the intention to cause the victim fear for her physical and mental harm (domestic), breaching an apprehended violence order.

He was also charged with police pursuit, speeding, using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, hinder or resist police officer and custody of knife in public.

Police were called to a service station on Minjungbal Dr following reports a woman was being held against her will by a man known to her about 10.15pm on Monday.

Officers allege when they arrived the man fled the scene in a car with the woman.

Tweed/Byron Police District officers chased the car and shortly after terminated the pursuit due to the manner of driving.

Police found the car on Amaroo Dr at Banora Point about 11.20pm.

The man is accused of trying to flee in the vehicle and ramming a police car.

He was arrested following what police allege was a short struggle and taken to Tweed Heads Police Station.

A 25-year-old woman in the car was not injured but she was taken to the Tweed Hospital for observation.

O’Conner was refused bail at Tweed Heads Local Court on Tuesday.

His case has been adjourned to May 15.
