A self-employed musician was more than five times over the legal alcohol limit when police stopped him near a local bowls club, a court has heard.
Matthew James Buggy, 36, pleaded guilty to high range drink driving in Tweed Heads Local Court on Friday.
Court documents reveal on April 16, Buggy had left Cherry Street Sports Club and was driving a van along Moon Street when he was stopped for a random breath test.
He returned a reading of 0.263.
Buggy’s lawyer told the court his client drove after he was asked to move the van out of a loading zone after a performance at the bowls club.
He said Buggy had only intended to move the van to friend’s address on Moon Street.
He conceded this was Buggy’s second offence of a similar nature in five years.
Magistrate Geoff Dunlevy said there were three prior drink driving offences on Buggy’s history.
He sentenced him to a nine month intensive corrections order with supervision and 100 hours community service.
Buggy was also disqualified for the minimum driving and interlock periods.
