Kolton J Johnston, 19, accused of stabbing 18-year-old at Sunnyside Mall, Murwillumbah in Tweed Shire

A young Tweed man has been bailed after he allegedly stabbed an 18-year-old following an argument at a popular North Coast shopping centre. Here’s what the court heard.

A Kynnumboon man who allegedly stabbed a teenager after an argument at Sunnyside Mall at Murwillumbah in the Tweed Shire has been granted bail.

Kolton J Johnston, 19, appeared through audiovisual link at Tweed Heads Local Court on Friday.

He has been charged with reckless wounding. No pleas have been entered.

Emergency services were called to the shopping centre on the corner of Brisbane St and Wollumbin St about 6.30pm on Thursday.

Tweed/Byron Police District officers found an 18-year-old man suffering a stab wound to his chest.

He was allegedly attacked after a verbal argument with Johnston, who was not known to him before the interaction.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the teen before he was taken to Murwillumbah District Hospital in a stable condition.

A crime scene was set up at the shopping centre and detectives began an investigation.

Johnston was arrested at a Murwillumbah address shortly after the alleged incident.

He was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged.

Magistrate Annette Sinclair granted Johnston conditional bail including a strict curfew and he must report to police seven days a week.

The case has been adjourned to September 20.

It was reported by Facebook users from the Tweed that the shopping centre was forced into lockdown by the incident.
