Animal lovers have been left shocked and outraged after the horrific discovery of a burnt Chihuahua’s body in northern NSW just months after an axe-wielding home invader was allegedly stabbed to death on the same street.
The RSPCA made an appeal to the public on Thursday after the dog’s body was found south of Tweed Heads late last month.
The grisly discovery was made on November 26 after the dog was reported missing from the owner’s property to the Tweed Council a week prior.
The Chihuahua had been “severely burnt” and was found on a grassed area on Oxford St, Kingscliff, according to an RSPCA statement.
RSPCA NSW Inspectors are urging members of the public with any information, including potential CCTV footage.
At Oxford St on Friday, people could be heard yelling in houses as cars sped through the residential area.
Neighbours said they were surprised to hear the sad news and described the area was unsafe.
A man told this publication through his locked security door he had moved in a few months after someone was stabbed to death on the street.
In April, convicted armed robber Trae Laurie, 29, was stabbed to death while invading the nearby home of 66-year-old grandfather Allan Kerr.
Police said Mr Kerr, who has not been charged, had grabbed a knife to defend himself from Laurie who was armed with an axe.
Another man, who also wished to remain anonymous, told the publication the find was “terrible”.
“It’s not a safe area with the housing commission and school nearby, we have to put up with noise from hoons in the street,” he said.
The RSPCA said they can not share any more information at this stage.
The community took to social media to express their outrage about what could have led to this awful incident.
“Better find that messed up person… it will be people next,” one woman wrote on Instagram.
“I feel sick honestly I pray to god they find this person and something happens bad to them for the poor dog and owners sake,” another woman wrote.
Another woman on Facebook wrote “heartbreaking and what a cruel person did this to a small animal. RIP beautiful”.
