NSW Police have arrested a former senior constable at Tweed Heads and charged him with sexually assaulting a teenage girl while on duty.
In June 2020, the Professional Standards Command launched an investigation into a report a woman was sexually assaulted by a police officer in southern NSW in 1998.
“Following extensive inquiries, a 53-year-old man was arrested at Tweed Heads Police Station about 10am today,” a statement read.
“He was charged with two counts of assault with act of indecency, two counts of sexual intercourse without consent and holder of public office misconduct.”
Police will allege in court the man was working as an officer and aged 28 when he assaulted a 17-year-old girl in October 1998.
He has been granted conditional bail to face Tweed Heads Local Court in late April.
