TWEED drivers can peel off their vehicle registration and never look back from January 1.

NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell and Minister for Roads Duncan Gay made the announcement earlier this year to ditch the stickers in a bid to save taxpayer dollars and cut down on bureaucratic red tape.

Drivers will simply be happy they never again have to pry off fiddly, sun-damaged stickers that refuse to budge.

The change will benefit most people in the region driving one of the 5.5 million light vehicles registered in NSW every year.

Only vehicles weighing over 4.5 tonnes would still have to show a registration sticker on their windscreen.

NSW Business Chamber chief executive Stephen Cartwright said the move would save money and time.

"The NSW Business Chamber estimates a saving of $5 million for NSW businesses or the equivalent of 160,000 hours in unnecessary red tape," he said.

Minister Gay said that windscreen registration labels were not needed with today's technology.

The NSW Government reminds drivers that although the stickers are not needed, registration is still required and enforced by law.

Motorists can still see their vehicle's registration details at the Roads and Maritime Service's free online registration check.

The labels were introduced in 1932 and cost the RMS half a million dollars to produce each year.
