BIG Day Out will be coming to the Tweed if the council gets its way.

Tweed Shire Council is in talks to snare the mega musical festival from the Gold Coast.

Councillor Warren Polglase said the Tweed would make BDO its own if the Queensland Government passed on the festival.

"We'll work our backsides off to get it," Cr Polglase said.

"The Queensland Government pinches things off us, why shouldn't we pinch something off them?"

Cr Polglase said the festival would be an asset to the community and have many positive benefits.

"It would be a vital injection of opportunity," he said

"And when we see opportunities like this we need to take them. We're also looking for support from the state government."

Tweed mayor Barry Longland was tight-lipped on possible locations, but said private property could be on the cards.

"We have some locations in mind but we don't want to say anything at this stage," he said.

"We would be conducting greater consultation with stakeholders and the local community."

Cr Longland added he didn't want to "pre-empt the judgement" of BDO organisers who were still in talks with the Queensland Government.

"We're hoping next week to meet the organisers," he said.

"I believe we have a lot to offer here."

According to Cr Polglase, the whole community would likely feel the benefits of the BDO and subsequent rises in tourist numbers.

"It'd bring stimulus to traders," he said.

"And visitations by thousands of people could lead to further opportunities in the shire."

Deputy mayor Michael Armstrong said the bid was still at an early stage.

"At the moment they (BDO organisers Peer Group Media) are still in discussion with the Queensland Government," he said.

"But we have expressed within council that we want to talk to organisers."

Cr Armstrong said festival locations would be announced at a later date if the proposal was successful.

"I think if we find the right location and determine what's needed we can go further with everything," he said.

The BDO will be forced to move from its Gold Coast Parklands home because the area will feature as the athlete's village in the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
