The Tweed Heads community and the local rugby league family in particular are numb after the tragic death of promising young footballer Liam Hampson.
The former Tweed Seagulls and Redcliffe Dolphins star was found dead at a European nightclub, after a trip of a lifetime turned horribly wrong.
Liam, 24, was partying with a group of NRL players at a nightclub in Spain - went missing, and was found dead 30 hours later.
He was said to have been enjoying an off-season holiday with friends who reportedly lost contact with Hampson at around 5.30am on Tuesday (AEDT), prompting desperate pleas on social media from Gold Coast Titans player AJ Brimson and Brisbane Broncos stars Jordan Riki and Jesse Arthars.
Barcelona police on Thursday morning confirmed to 7News that a body believed to be that of Liam was found on the floor of Sala Apollo nightclub.
According to Spanish media outlets, the police force is working on the theory that Liam accidentally fell from a height of 10 metres at the nightclub.
His father Brett Hampson said “We cannot thank his mates enough for being there with Liam having the time of his life and assisting in the search for our boy. Our thoughts are with them”.
Liam spent at four years at the Tweed Seagulls before moving to Redcliffe at the end of 2021.
Tweed Seagulls CEO Matt Francis said Liam was a player of great talent and a young man taken in his prime.
“His game awareness and his position as a dummy half was critical,” Francis said.
“He was a very clever player, tough and resilient at the same time … He had the ability to read the game.
“Liam brought with him an infectious positivity and a great sense of energy, one of the types of characters you need for a team environment.”
Liam also worked as a teacher’s aide at Keebra Park State High School.
“We will honour him moving forward, but at the moment, we’re respecting the family’s privacy,” Francis said.
Liam’s sister Tiarna shared a heartbreaking Instagram post on Thursday morning confirming she had received the “saddest news possible”.
“We are so heartbroken. Liam was the best brother I ever could of asked for and made me a better person” Tiarna wrote.
The tragic news comes only 48 hours before the Australian team are due to play in Scotland in their second pool game in Coventry.
Liam’s mother Lorna Morton, said in a heartfelt post: “We are heartbroken, Liam was the best person, he had a heart of gold and words cannot express our grief.”
