Coles is set to depart Banora Village Shopping Centre in January, leaving the shopping centre without a major supermarket.

A development application lodged with Tweed Shire Council proposes a near $1 million renovation of the village shopping centre, which includes the expansion of the supermarket floor space, an array of new stores and dining area and reconfigured carparking.

There will also be an online pick-up and home delivery space for the adjacent supermarket.

But Coles will not be a part of the future at the village shopping complex.

“Coles is constantly evaluating our store network to ensure we are delivering the best shopping experience for our customers,” a company spokesperson said.

“As part of that process, the Coles supermarket on the corner of Darlington and Leisure Drives Banora Point will close permanently on the 23rd of January 2023.

“We are working closely with our team members during this transition period, including offering redeployment opportunities at other stores in our network.”

Despite rumours suggesting that Woolworths would jump into the vacuum left by Coles, a Woolworths spokesperson has played down the chain opening at Banora Village Shopping Centre.

“Nothing much to say from our end at the moment,” the spokesperson said.

The estimated cost of the shopping centre redevelopment is $950,000 and the applicant is Yi Fong International Pty Ltd.

The development application also proposed an extension of the centre’s permissible trading hours: Allowing it to operate from 7am to 9pm on Sundays and public holidays (it is currently restricted to 8am-6pm on these days).

The applicant has addressed noise concerns about the proposed extension of trading hours.

“The changes ... would not result in any additional amenity impacts to the surrounding residential areas,” the application states.

“The source noise levels anticipated for a shopping centre use, which includes car doors closing, cars driving on site, people laughing and talking and the tractor moving the shopping trolleys, do not exceed the applicable noise limits for any hours between 6am and 9pm.”
