JACK Evans Boat Harbour in Tweed has received an architectural design award at a prestigious ceremony held in Canberra.

The $8 million project was celebrated as a success and recognised for its pleasing aesthetics and practical construction by the Australian Institute of Landscape Artists late last week.

Judges of the award praised the projects consideration towards environmental factors such as flooding, tidal surges and coastal erosion.

They were also impressed at the projects brand new timber boardwalks and stacked concrete fingers which are used as an unusual and eye-catching stabilisation technique.

Design consultants ASPECT were awarded the prominent National Landscape Artists Award for their role in revitalising the popular recreation centre.

Tweed Mayor Barry Longland said the project was fantastic and was proud of the work that was completed.

"This national award is recognition from the peak national landscape architecture body that Jack Evans Boat Harbour is an outstanding project and a fitting gateway to the Tweed."

Cr Longland also mentioned the design was the result of community discussion and knew Tweed residents were out and about enjoying their new harbour.

"This is a design which, in a sense, is owned by the Tweed community, as the original design for Jack Evans flowed from a concept design by Tweed Shire Council, which was developed out of extensive community consultation in 2006."

Upgrades to the harbour include a water amphitheatre, modern park furniture, sophisticated landscaping and new barbecues.
