George named on Honours List

FORMER Tweed deputy mayor George Davidson said it brought a tear to his eye when he was named on the Australia Day Honours List.

FORMER Tweed deputy mayor George Davidson said it brought a tear to his eye when he was named on the Australia Day Honours List.

Mr Davidson received the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division yesterday for his service to the Tweed community through a range of local government, sporting and veterans organisations.

The 71-year-old New Farm resident said the honour was something he had never envisioned for himself.

“I’m so grateful to be receiving this wonderful award. It bought a tear to my eye when I opened the letter from the Governor-General,” Mr Davidson said.

“This is something I never thought would happen to me. I never even won a sporting award when I was growing up.

“I’m still in shock over it.”

Mr Davidson lived in the Tweed for 16 years before he relocated to Queensland.

He served the shire as a Tweed councillor from 2000 to 2004, the last three years as deputy mayor.

Mr Davidson served as president of the Cabarita Beach/Bogangar Residents Association from 1997 to 1999.

This past year he resigned as chairman of the Cabarita Beach Sports Club, a position he had held from 1996.
