Multiple fire crews called to a blaze in the state’s north battled to control a fierce and expanding inferno well into Saturday night and the following morning.
Emergency services were called to the fire about 5.30pm on Saturday after reports of a building fire at 23 Morton St, Chinderah.
Fire crews from Banora Point, Kingscliff, Murwillumbah, Tweed/Byron, Cudgen and Ballina arrived to find thick black smoke issuing from the rear of a large commercial tenancy housing a landscape, office, and civil construction business.
Working hard to control the blaze, firefighters used a variety of defensive measures against the blaze that was well developed and expanding rapidly.
About 40 firefighters attended the scene, working hard to contain the fire to the building of origin before being able to expand and protect nearby properties.
Fire crews had to work in a defensive fire attack, due to the risk of internal structure collapse, and remained in attendance for some time until the heavy fuel load could be extinguished entirely.
Due to the structure being unsafe, firefighters were unable to enter the structure to break apart the fuel load allowing for a faster extinguishment.
Firefighters from Banora Point and Brunswick Heads remained on scene Sunday morning, on fire duty operations.
“This is an unfortunate loss to local businesses, and our thoughts are with all those affected,” Fire and Rescue Banora Point spokesman said.
“There are thankfully no injuries reported at this stage.”
Fire and Rescue are working with NSW police as investigations to determine the cause of the fire continue.
