The fault caused systems in Victoria to shut down completely, leading to the outage which affected 15 per cent of customers.

The outage began at approximately 7.45pm and left most people's calls cut until 12.00am, including some emergency calls.

The NSW Police service issued a warning over social media that emergency calls were being affected and advised the use of another carrier or landline instead.

"Police are advising the public of an outage on the Vodafone network that may affect those attempting to contact Triple Zero or the Police Assistance Line," a spokesperson said.

Most residents on Vodafone networks were completely cut from making calls, while some still had internet.

Vodafone apologised for this disruption and said they worked as quickly as possible to fix the problem.

They were confused that emergency service was cut, but conceded it may have been due to congestion.

"We are investigating reports that Triple Zero service was unavailable to some customers," the spokesperson said.
