Decomposed body found in bag on Tweed River bank

UPDATED, 12.10pm: POLICE say a member of the public discovered a badly decomposed body in a bag on the banks of the Tweed River at the weekend.

UPDATED, 12.10pm:  Tweed police have confirmed the discovery of a badly decomposed body on the banks of the Tweed River.

It was found between Dulguigan Rd and Tweed Valley Way in the Tweed River at Tumbulgum (click here to see map below).

A member of the public discovered a bag containing the human remains on Saturday evening and immediately informed police.

Police Inspector Saul Wiseman said after police inspected the bag, the contents were taken to the morgue and a post mortem to ascertain the cause of death would be conducted in coming days.

Detectives from the Tweed/ Byron local area command with assistance from the state crime command homicide squad were continuing with investigations into the suspicious death and were yet to determine the sex of the deceased.

INITIAL REPORT, 11.19am:  Tweed SES crews were tasked by police to search the Tweed River on Saturday night after a body was found near Tumbulgum.

Tweed regional SES controller Brian Sheahan confirmed the body was badly decomposed.

Mr Sheahan said his members conducted a thorough land and boat search for about an hour of the Tweed River and its banks between Tumbulgum and Murwillumbah but found no evidence.

Tweed, Pottsville and Murwillumbah SES crews joined in the search for evidence.

Although Tweed police were unavailable for comment, a member of the service confirmed an incident had taken place on Saturday evening.

SECOND DEATH IN DAYS

Meanwhile, this is the second person found dead in the river at Tumbulgum in the past week.

In a separate incident, Tumbulgum man Mark Napieracz, 35, was found dead on Wednesday at 1.30pm.

It's believed Mr Napieracz had been fishing. Police are not treating his death as suspicious.
