TWEED Shire Council may reopen Fingal Headland to wedding ceremonies after a period of community consultation.

The headland has been closed to couples since June due to mess and graffiti left behind by a minority of wedding groups.

But the council is preparing to consult with the public to decide whether the ban should be lifted and nuptials should resume at the pristine location

Marriage celebrant Lucille Brace was in favour of the headland reopening for weddings, but with guidelines in place people could follow.

"It's one of the most beautiful places in the area and a great spot for ceremonies," she said.

"The council needs to set guidelines for its use."

Ms Brace was surprised to hear the state the headland had been left in after a few rogue weddings, as celebrants generally were the last to leave.

She proposed that a fair time limit on weddings and an alcohol free zone could curb the behaviour of the unruly minority.

A spokesperson confirmed that the council was working hard to prepare for community discussion with interested locals.

"In regards to the ban, council is in the process of preparing material to consult with the community on the issue before a final decision is made."

The council reiterated that ceremonies were not permitted at the headland, but couples may take photos in the location.

"Anyone can take their wedding photos on the headland - the issue is with wedding ceremonies."
